Making Memories at Christmas

If you have a young family you might want to consider making memories with your children. If you are like me, you want your children to grow up to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Even if they choose a path other than the 'narrow way' that leads to eternal life, they will NOT be able to forget the memories implanted in them as a child.

Our home wasn't perfect. My children will be the first to attest to that. One thing that I know, is that my husband and I did our best to instill godly principles in our children. Different holidays throughout the year give a wonderful training ground for this.

We thought deeply on what holidays were all about and whether they had godly roots. Many of them do not; but we chose not to throw all the holidays out because everything about them was not what we would desire for our family.

As we quickly fast-forward this time of year towards Thanksgiving and Christmas, you might be getting frazzled and wondering which experiences to include in the memories and traditions you are forming for your families.

Making Memories:

  • We have done everything from Hanukkah, the Passover Seder, and some other Jewish feasts (just for the experience), Thanksgiving, and we have celebrated Christmas with and without a Christmas tree.

  • Christmas is a time where today and for almost one hundred years, it has increased in secular traditions. We have chosen not to include Santa and  we certainly get turned off to all the materialistic hype.

  • You have to choose with your husband's leadership (and not yours), what traditions will be included in your family. I was turned off so badly to the secularized traditions that for a number of years, I influenced my husband's leadership on what he would like to have in our family.

  • For a number of years when our children were little, we had a 'Christmas Pageant' that our children put on. One year, our youngest son was born a week before Christmas and he was 'baby Jesus.' My oldest son would write the script and one tired mom would watch their production. This is a wonderful memory that we all still talk about.

  • When I first was married, I had never ever made a Christmas cookie. Ever. I didn't even know that there was such a thing. We had to bring cookies for a couples' Christmas Party. Wow, those were the ugliest cut-out cookies ever made!! Too bad I don't have a picture of them!! Since then, I have been making Christmas cookies for our family, involving my children and even my sons when they were young. We do more than get on a sugar high, we have always taken cookies to neighbors and homeschooling friends. It became quite a tradition that we still do. Another wonderful memory!!

I could share forever of making memories with my family. What memories have you made and what ones will you include this year?

  1. Loved seeing your pictures, how fun! We have a tradition of decorating the tree together as a family, including Christmas music.

We made and decorated Christmas cookies when they were younger. I'm going to try and do it again this year, now that my oldest is back from college. Hopefully we can coordinate our schedules!
