Least of These

"Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren,
ye have done it unto me."
~Matthew 25:40~

Bitterness!! We have the choice to forgive or become bitter!! Bitterness lurks at our door waiting to devour us in its clutches and cripple our mental, emotional, and physical health for the rest of our lives. Bitterness doesn't have to grasp its evil claws onto us, we can choose to live at peace with ourselves and others. Even if they never forgive us, we can forgive them.

Something that we sometimes don't realize is that the way we treat those around us, even those we love, is a direct gauge of our relationship with God.

"Consequently, to be at odds with a fellow Christian spells double trouble: not only are we at odds with our brother, but we are also at odds with Jesus in him!" (Forgiveness: How to Get Along With Everybody All the Time! By Harold Vaughan)

It is important to teach our children to forgive each other but it is far more important to keep short records ourselves, as an example for our children. More is taught than caught and our children learn best when we are not keeping them captive to a boring lesson when they can learn from the action of their parents. Ugh!!

When I have been offended, I have found it important to forgive that person. I haven't always found this to be easy. There have been times that it takes me hours to work through the situation and I have been known to stay up late, reading the bible and praying through until I work it out with the Lord.

When a person will not forgive you, or they have done wrong to you, it is still very important for you to forgive them whether or not they grant you forgiveness. If you don't, you will end up the worse-for-the-wear although you were not the one who gave the offense.

Nursing homes are full of bitter old men and women. One day, when I am old, I want to be a blessing not lashing out in bitterness that has accumulated over the years.

How about you?? What do you do to make sure you don't become bitter??

Faint and Worry MUCH; Pray and Faint NOT!!

"Men ought always to faint pray; and not to faint."
~Luke 18:1~

Oops!! I typed 'faint' instead of 'pray!' Isn't that what we too often do instead  of pray?! That is what I am doing right now - fainting!! That is why I am writing this post!! Not to divulge my circumstances but because my situations diminish through encouraging others in Christ.

Sometimes we pray, or think we are praying while all the while our thoughts wander and we are daydreaming, thinking, or maybe we are worrying and filling our minds with anxiety.

This verse comes from the parable Jesus told of the 'unjust judge.' You can find it in Luke 18:1-8. It is about a widow. I love the stories about widows because I need to learn, now, all the character that is spoken about in the bible about widows. Even if we are not widows, don't you think God intends for us to develop those character traits?!

It isn't going to come automatic should one of us become a widow. The widows we want to emulate developed this godly character over their whole life.

This story tells how the widow had an adversary. The unjust judge did NOT fear God but she came to him anyhow because he was in authority.

She said to him, "Avenge me of mine adversary." He would not avenge her. But she kept coming to him with her need until he finally became tired of her persistence and granted her request.

God who is just, loves you so much!! He cares for you more than you could ever think. He is the God who created the universe so vast that we cannot even imagine or comprehend it. We are trapped inside a finite mind and so often put his vast creation out of our minds, taking it for granite. We strive to figure our problems out ourselves instead of calling out to him for help. All God wants is to solve our problems for us, totally, Himself!!

We worry over small things making them grow out of proportion. We don't cry to God day and night like this passage says that God's elect, Christians should do. The passage says, "And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?"

It goes on to say, "I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on earth?" ~ Luke 18:6-8~

Are you trusting God for each situation in your life, home, marriage, children, finances??

OR, are you striving in your own strength to figure it out and FAINTING out of the anxiety of it all!!

God wants us to Pray and Faint NOT!!

What will YOU do??

For me, I am going to stop fainting and pray much instead of fainting much!!

Love is Not Irritable: Part 1

Free Digital Photos

As I weekly work through each topic in the book, The Love Dare, I find that each challenge reminds me of areas in my life that I fall short. I don't feel qualified to write on marriage, yet none of us are because our righteousness is not found in ourselves but in Jesus Christ.

"But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags;
and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away."
~Isaiah 64:6~

"Behold, I have longed after thy precepts:
quicken me in thy righteousness."
~Psalm 119:40~

The only qualification I have is that I have been married for 33 years to the same sweet man through thick and thin. The more I grow, the more I realize that my marital problems are not  'him' but ME!! It is sure easy to point a finger at my dear husband and blame him for our moments of intensity. He is human and I can sure find fault with him instead of ME!!

Have you ever blamed your dear husband when you disagree with him? I have! Have you ever noticed your reaction to a request he might ask of you? I know, I know, some of you might say that your husband was totally unreasonable with you, not considerate, demanding, rough-around-the-edges, and maybe even seemed a bit unkind!!

If your husband (or mine) is irritable, it doesn't give you (or me) an excuse to be irritable back!! So, we will not be talking about our husbands. No one who ever gave me sound advice for my marriage ever focused on 'how bad my husband was' but on 'how bad I was.'

Godly counsel is always opposite from the world and what our flesh would desire. Ladies too often find counsel from another friend and the two spend their time complaining about their husbands. Just listen when you are out how women bash their husbands. Do you think that selfish attitude is helping the state of marriages?? I don't think so!!

When I was younger (like twenties and thirties) I have no clue how much damage I did to my marriage!! Submission wasn't a word I understood to be anything other than my husband leading once we finished disagreeing. Patterns are set in those early days and years of marriage. You girls who are in those years, do everything you can to study God's word about submission, and learn what your role is as wife. You will bring your marriage to marital bliss a whole lot faster if you focus on being the one to change through Christ's transforming power in your life.

My favorite dictionary is the Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary. The newer dictionaries just don't do justice to words and give the same  explanation of the meaning. Too often the words are watered down.

In working through this definition, you can easily see your own irritable nature. Look to the cross and claim the blood through Jesus Christ to cleanse your life from all unrighteousness. The lack of marritable bliss is SIN in my life not his. My husband has responded more and more loving as "I" changed my approach and responses to him. Marriage is not about me but about HIM!!

IRRITABLE: a. [from irritate] Susceptible of excitement, or of heat and action.
2. Very susceptible of anger or passion; easily inflamed or exasperated; as in irritable temper.

Hmmmm!!! I find that very interesting!! The fact that 'heat and action', anger, passion, easily inflamed, exasperated, or irritable temper' are words and phrases used give me reason to watch for this in myself. Sometimes it is the little things that can cause irritation, sometimes it is the big things like finances (which coincidentally are the primary cause of differences in marriages), and other times it just might be a cyclical or hormonal thing with us ladies, or lack of sleep. This is in no wise to make an excuse for being irritable. It is not OK!! Lets deal with these tendencies in our lives!!

Just in case you are able to read through this post and not to 'identify' with being irritable yourSELF, here are some words that are synonyms of irritable. Do you see yourSELF in any of these??
  • ill-humored
  • easily irritated
  • easily annoyed
  • easily angered
  • irascible: susceptible of anger; easily provoked or inflamed with resentment.
  • easily vexed: teased; provoked; irritated; troubled; agitated; disquieted; afflicted (put easily before each of those words)
  • touchy
  • oversensitive
  • testy: fretful; peevish; petulant; easily irritate.
  • peevish: to complain or mutter; fretful (fretful again!); petulant; apt to mutter and complain; easily vexed or fretted; querulous; hard to please, sourness; expressing discontent; sullen; froward (that has to do with the mouth).
  • waspish: snappish; irascible; quick to resent and trifling affront (some of these old-fashioned words are the best in describing a wife...does this word have a sting to it like a wasp?!)
  • impatient: Uneasy or fretful under suffering; not bearing pain with composure; not enduring evil without fretfulness, uneasiness, and a desire or effort to get rid of the evil.
  • We are all apt to be impatient under wrongs; but it is a Christian duty not to be impatient in sickness, or under any afflictive dispensation of Providence (our circumstances).
  • Not suffering quietly; not enduring.
  • pettish: Fretful (fretful again); peevish; subject to freaks of temper!! Freak "A sudden causeless change of turn of the mind: a whim or fancy.

This week, I am asking the Lord to continue to work on my heart without being irritable towards my husband in my approach to him or my response to him. I will remember these synonyms that break down the word 'irritable' into bite-size character that isn't so desirable!!

I will continue to work on being Patient, kind, not selfish, thoughtful, and not rude; as learning to be more loving is Christlike no matter if you are a newlywed, married for 5 years, 50 years or more, or somewhere in-between!!

"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as a sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal!!"
~1 Corinthians 13:1~

Opportunity

What an opportunity to write for five minutes each Friday!! I would never have thought about it in a thousand years!! I am not too original!! No editing. What if I say something wrong?! What if I say something dumb?! Well, here goes....

Today was a gorgeously mistily damp day. I would say that it was a rainy day but here in my neck of the woods, that wasn't exactly true. I'm not sure if it ever really rained. But (never start a sentence with 'but) but, it was sure damp!! I haven't watered my plants all week because the whole week has been damp.

As I sat on my front porch, which at my house, the front of the house faces the side of  the property instead of the front...that is so you can sit on the porch and gaze deep into the woods. Oh, and the woods are so pretty this time of year after rainy dampness causing the trees to have a lush hue of green with ferns and blueberry bushes covering the floor of the woods. Why are the bottom of woods called a floor? Who knows!!

What an opportunity to have a porch to sit on that faces out into a beautiful view. It is a place to reflect about the goodness of God. It is a place to renew my spirit and draw near to God. What an opportunity.

Do you have a secret place where you draw near to God?

Italian Cream Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

Here is a tried and true cake recipe if you want to make one from scratch. I have made this cake for over 20 years. It has a nice texture and the cream cheese in the frosting is deliciously sweet!!

I am not an expert, just a novice cake maker. If you want an expert, Esther over at Our Simple Country Life is where to look. I flub a cake just as often as it turns out. Sigh!! I just don't 'get it' and keep making cakes over and over again. This cake was delicious but my frosting job often has much to be desired. Those black crumbs on top are Oreos that survived all in my household who discovered the package had been opened. Everyone LOVES to snag an Oreo or dip their fingers into the frosting!! Yummy!!

CAKE BATTER:

1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup oil
2 cups sugar
5 eggs, separate out yolks
1 teaspoon soda
2 1/4 cups flour
1 cup buttermilk
1 tablespoon vanilla
1 cup coconut
1 cup nuts, chopped

FROSTING:

8 oz. pkg. cream cheese
1/2 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 lb. box/4 cups powdered sugar

Cream butter, add oil and sugar and beat until smooth. Add yolks and beat well. Add flour mixed with soda. Add buttermilk, vanilla, coconut and nuts. Beat egg whites stiff, then fold into above mixture. Bake in 2-8" greased and floured pans at 350 until toothpick comes out clean (about 45-50 minutes.) Mix frosting ingredients until smooth. Frost on cake when cooled (WHEN COOLED!!)

The Solid Rock

Chimney Rock Park

The hymn, The Solid Rock, has come to my mind over the past couple weeks and has spoken to my heart. Hymns have spoken deeply in my life both growing up and as an adult. When my oldest two children were 5 and 7, I realized that they didn't even know, Trust and Obey. In fact, they didn't know any hymns!!

Most hymns express many more spiritual truths than the choruses do, so they teach theology as you sing. I love the old choruses and I love the Bible verses put to music that we also sing in our church but by far my favorite is singing a hymn. Do your children know many of the great hymns of the faith?

Knowing the story behind the writing of a hymn enriches my appreciation of the song. Here is a wonderful description of how this hymn began over at Hymns With a Message.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.

Chorus:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, His covenant, His blood.
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.

Don't Look Back!!

Remember Lot's wife!!

Photo Credit: Haven of Rest

Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it;
and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it!!
~Luke 17:32,33~

Jesus is coming again!!

Are we going about our life as if we will be changing diapers, washing dishes, doing laundry, raising our children, forever? Are we finding ourselves caught in the season of life as if we will be there forever? I know I have done that!!

When the day seems endless and we are constantly battling exhaustion, it sure does feel like our children will never be toilet trained or learn their multiplication tables, and the laundry pile never will get smaller!! It is easy to go from meal to meal, washing an enormous pile of dishes without ever seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

The people in Noah's day didn't heed his warnings of the coming flood and continued to eat, drink, and get married without living their lives for God. In the days of Lot, they also did the same thing, eating and drinking without a care in the world. Noah and Lot were godly men and their families were saved. But Lot's wife looked back!!

We can have joy in the season we find ourselves in today. Changing diapers, washing that pile of dishes, and making a dent in the ever-increasing mound of laundry. Enjoying our children can be the very thing we lose our life over. Lets lose ourselves today in our children, our calling for Jesus's sake and we will preserve our life. Look to Jesus. Talk to Jesus, He cares about us. We will 'find our life' in serving others.

Look at the big picture. Jesus is coming again!! Just as Noah was saved from the flood and an ungodly world, just as Lot was saved from wicked Sodom, we will be saved from the ungodliness of this world when Jesus returns!!

Be a testimony first to your family. We don't know how long we will be able to have an influence over their lives. We cannot count on tomorrow. We can only count on today.

Make today count for the Lord!!

Love is not Rude

Have you ever answered the phone with a totally different tone than you were speaking to your husband just the second before?!

I need to work on having a cheerful tone when I answer the phone. But isn't it interesting how we are kinder and more polite to those outside our home than to those we hold dearest?! We all tend to get so used to those in our home that we can be rude instead of loving.

My wonderful husband deserves the very best attitude and behavior from me. I might not be as evident in how I manifest rudeness. I need to be sure that I portray Christ to my husband most of all. After all, my children are watching!! They will see me as a hypocrite if I am polite to friends and strangers more than their father!!

Who I am when the doors to our home are closed...is who I really am!!

We are ladies, wives, mothers, daughters of the King with a noble calling to serve Jesus in our home and when we go out into our community.

I was thinking. It would be a great idea to review some manners and apply them to ourselves. How about showing your husband this week your best manners and see where that takes you??

Remember, when you first met your husband, how sweet you were to him?? Why is it we tend to fall into patterns and become dull?!

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Manners can be fun!!
  • Learning manners helps me have a kinder heart!!
  • Love has manners!!
  • Look at your husband when he speaks to you :-)
  • SMILE!!!!!!!
  • LISTEN!! And do NOT interrupt!!
  • Ask him, "How are you this morning??"
  • Or, if he gets up before you and is off to work, email him the question or text him!!
  • Give your husband a HUG and KISS!!
  • Look for ways to show gratitude to your husband. Men LOVE being appreciated (and so do you!!)
  • Don't say things in public that might embarrass your husband (even if he would never hear) as that affects how others view him. Speak well of him in the 'gates.'
Nothing hurts a relationship between a husband and wife more than poor manners. There is no excuse for being rude to your husband. Even if you think 'he' is being rude to you!! Kindness will speak to your husband over time while rudeness on your part will only make matters worse.

If you are like me,  you desire a sweet and special relationship with your husband. Being Christlike is having manners.

Five ways wives can have poor manners:
  1. Over-reminding your husband to fix the shelf, hang a picture, pick up after himself!!
  2. Nagging!! Oh, that was number one!!
  3. Arguing with him when he leads instead of submitting (ouch!!)
  4. Being moody all day because something 'went wrong!!' Move on!!
  5. Rolling to the edge of the bed with your back to him because of differences (not because you normally sleep that way...cuddle up although the day was tough!!
Excellent manners towards your husband goes beyond politely saying, please and thank you.  Of course, saying sweet things will go a long way to improve a rough day. It will also start to transform your heart when  you intentionally have good manners towards your husband. You just might fall in love all over again!!

"Charity (love) suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth  not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;"
1 Corinthians 13:4-5~

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

By Helen H. Lemmel

O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There's light for a look at the Saviour,
And life more abundant and free!

Chorus:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face;
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.

Thro' death into life everlasting
He passed, and we follow Him there;
Over us sin no more hath dominion--
For more than conqu'rors we are!

His word shall not fail you--He promised;
Believe Him, and all will be well;
Then go to a world that is dying,
His perfect salvation to tell!

Establishing Healthy Habits

But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
1 Timothy 4:7

For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable
unto all things having promise of the life that now is,
and of that which is to come.
1 Timothy 4:8

I exercised on and off while my children were growing up and then there were eight years where keeping fit was not part of my day. When I was pregnant, I exercised. When my children were babies, and I had children from teen to toddlers...I exercised with them crawling around between and under my legs. There really isn't much reason not to exercise because our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and so we need to be a good steward of the amazingly wonderful body that God gave us...and keep fit...or we just might find ourselves fit to be tied!!

Simply put...I gained 25 pounds and lost them when I started exercising again. I use T-Tapp and just love it!!

My goals for keeping healthy are to exercise each morning. Where in the past,  I could get away with exercising a couple times a week, I can't now!! I need to 'move' when I get up in the morning to get those kinks out of my back, shoulder, neck, and knees. It also wakes me up to have a more alert Quiet Time.

I have slacked off in other healthy habits and here are some goals:

  1. Daily Quiet Time alone with my Lord.
  2. Exercise 15 - 30 minutes each morning.
  3. Get outside and work on bushes, weeds, and flowers around the house or take a walk.
  4. MOVE. MOVE. MOVE. Cleaning is MOVING!!
  5. Drink 2 glasses of water before breakfast (and hopefully 4-6 more.)
  6. Think thoughts that are uplifting, encouraging, and not melancholy.
  7. Be Thankful (May's Habit for the Month) continually for others and what God has and IS doing for me and others
  8. Pray continually for others so I won't have time to think thoughts that drift downward.

What are YOUR healthy habits??

Marci, over at the Thankful Homemaker got me started on making some healthy goals. Hop on over to her place and read what she shared.

Homemaking Outdoor Happiness!!

The sun doesn't always shine where we live. It has a habit of staying behind the clouds more than some areas of the country. A couple of summers ago my flowers stopped blooming because it rained and stayed cloudy so much. This summer looks promising. Promising more sunny days than cloudy.

Today is the third day that I have been outside. Monday and Tuesday was drizzly rain but nothing daunting....I went outside for about half an hour trying to dig the stubborn sod where I will plant my hydrangeas. The ground around our house is rocky and hard with a somewhat clayish soil. I suppose once I get my hydrangeas into the ground it will be all worth the while. For now, the ground sure reminds me of my stubborness and sinfulness, each little rock representing the clutter of sin in my life. You know, those sins we don't mean to do. The unintentional unkindnesses or slights we do...that we feel awful about when we realize our husband or children have reacted because our spirit was wrong. Maybe you don't have those problems like I do??

Today, the sun is brightly shining. It is a good thing because I intend to clip the grass and weeds around the house. The WHOLE house!! Our weed-wacker is broken for the second year in a row, and I have lessons to learn through doing this garden task. First of all, should you feel sorry for me (awwww that's sweet) but DON'T!! I am thoroughly enjoying it except for the extremely tired feeling...so I occasionally take a bloggie-break :-) I can't help but see all the weeds and unruly grass which has grown back....already this spring!! Just like the rocks, the weeds remind me of sin and bitterness that spring up and choke out the beauty God intended to bring to my life.

I was thankful that the weed-wacker was broken as one of the boys would have done the job instead of me. To squat as I manually snipped the weeds with the scissor clippers was invigorating and actually uplifting. We tend to have various machines to be our servants giving women today much more free time than my grandmother who was married in 1910!! That is why it is important to work out (but that is another blog post, lol.) To be outside in the fresh air, working hard today as I listened to Kevin Inufuku sing, raised my thoughts to my Creator and Lord while tending to my beautiful plants. I cannot possibly express the depth of love for God that I felt as I worked...I could have resented that my husband didn't repair the wacker, after all, it was broken last summer too!! It was exhilarating to be lifted above my problems which had me in their grip just yesterday. The problems are the same but my focus has shifted to Jesus.

Don't just read my post and smile and agree. Don't just surf the blogs if it is the middle of the day. Spend time with your children. Be diligent in homeschooling them (if you are a homeschooler), get up and clean your house...do what the blogs you read suggest. Learn and do!! Do something invigorating and you will find it easier to be patient with your children and your difficulties of life will become dim.  Reward yourself with a break if you have done what you should be doing first; don't sit at your laptop all morning procrastinating your duties.

Have you found yourself in the mully-grubs?? Have you found that getting outside and doing some yard or garden work elevates your spirit emotionally and spiritually as you are physically active in the fresh air?? Share what you have done to bless your home outside and how it helped to draw you to the Lord and balance you out.

Does Your Rose Have Thorns??

Roses Are Red,
Violets are blue,
Sugar is sweet,
And so are you.

 A rose has a thorn,
A violet has none,
A heart is torn,
Sends one to the Lord!!

A rose had no thorn,
That isn't the norm,
No thorns in your life,
No pain, no gain!!
Last two verses~ A stab at poetry~Judith

Roses are the flower of choice when a man expresses love to his sweetheart. They are admired for their beauty and evoke emotions of love in the heart of the woman who receives one or a dozen. The thorns are there to protect the rose against predators that might harm the beautiful, soft flower. But why did my roses have no thorns?

The thorns in my life make me depend more on the Lord.

God's Given Thorns

Strange gift indeed!--a thorn to prick--
To pierce into the very quick,
To cause perpetual sense of pain.
Strange gift! And yet, 'twas given for gain.
Unwelcome, but it came to stay;
Nor could it e'en be prayed away.
It came to fill its God-planned place---
A life-enriching means of grace
O much-tried saint with fainting heart
The thorn with its abiding smart,
With all its wearing, ceaseless pain
Can be thy means of priceless gain.
And so whate'er thy thorn may be,
From God accept it willingly.
But reckon Christ, --His life --His power
To keep, in thy most trying hour.
And sure -- thy life will richer grow;
His grace sufficient will bestow.
And in Heav'n's morn thy joy 'twill be
That by His thorn, He strengthened thee.

~Author Unknown~

My life has thorns, does yours?? In some ways, I would prefer that life didn't have its 'thorns,' yet, without the pain that the thorns cause, there would be no growth. The thorns strengthen the beauty and fragrance of the rose because it is not weakened by predators. The thorns of my life cause me pain, yet keep the devil away. The strength of the rose is like the strength I find in the Lord who strengthens me with all might, according to His glorious power. Patience, longsuffering with joyfulness when trials and temptations bring thorns of pain to protect me from my predator, Satan. I am thankful for my trials (my problems) and the beauty God is turning my life into just when I feel utterly unable to carry on with some issue of life.

I have seen God's faithfulness this week as He eases the pain of the thorns. How about you??

"That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing,
being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.
Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness. Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:"
~Colossians 1:10-12~

I am the rose of Sharon, and the Lily of the Valleys.
