The Solid Rock

Chimney Rock Park

The hymn, The Solid Rock, has come to my mind over the past couple weeks and has spoken to my heart. Hymns have spoken deeply in my life both growing up and as an adult. When my oldest two children were 5 and 7, I realized that they didn't even know, Trust and Obey. In fact, they didn't know any hymns!!

Most hymns express many more spiritual truths than the choruses do, so they teach theology as you sing. I love the old choruses and I love the Bible verses put to music that we also sing in our church but by far my favorite is singing a hymn. Do your children know many of the great hymns of the faith?

Knowing the story behind the writing of a hymn enriches my appreciation of the song. Here is a wonderful description of how this hymn began over at Hymns With a Message.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.

Chorus:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, His covenant, His blood.
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
