On Becoming a Grammy

"I have been young, and now am old;
yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken,
nor his seed begging bread."
~Psalm 37:25~

I wrote this post yesterday afternoon as I sat at my kitchen table musing about becoming a grammy.

At 1:56 and 1:58am my 24 year old daughter gave birth to identical twin girls by c-section. They were born at 34 weeks and weigh 5.9 and 5.10 pounds!! I was blessed to be with her for the birth...and now can say that I am a grammy!!

I was young for so long. I think I stayed young longer than most people, but then I wasn't a Grammy!!

The youngest grandmother I ever knew was 33 years old. She had her first child at seventeen. That's young!!

My Gramma had beautiful white hair. Grandparents are supposed to be old.

So, I am older than many of my friends who already have a bunch of grandkids, but I am going to have a jump start into being a grammy.

I don't have the white hair to go along with the position and I still 'feel' young though my actual age defies me. I wish I had the wisdom in motherhood that I now have as I become a grammy for the first time!!

You may not be a grandmother yet, but Lord willing, you will be someday.

Just as I have always thought that it was important to practice the godly characteristics required of a widow who is over sixty; I also think it is important to be the kind of woman that God desires a grandmother to be.

Character training takes a long time in most of us, I can't suddenly change gears now that I am about to be a grammy. I am either that woman by now, or not!!

Some verses to encourage us to become that godly grandmother who influences the next generation for Christ:

"When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee,
which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois,
and thy mother Eunice;
and I am persuaded that in thee also."

"And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD,
choose you this day whom ye will serve,
whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other
side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites,
in whose land ye dwell:
But as for me and my house,
we will serve the LORD."
~Joshua 24:15~

  1. Oh Judith, how absolutely precious!! Congratulations to you and your family :) They really are identical! I stared at the sweeties for quite a while and thought maybe the pictures were of the same girl. God is so amazing and good!

I am thrilled for all of you :)

  2. Congratulations Judith!! They are precious! How exciting that you could be there when she had them - and I have the feeling you will probably be there to help her with them for awhile too. :)

    1. Those aren't the babies. They are precious though, and both almost 6 pounds. A blessing when they are 6 weeks early.

  4. Congratulations on your new grand daughters! I am sure they are so precious! My mother had her first grandchild the year she turned 60, as she was not married until she was almost 32 and had her first child at 34 (she went on to have 5 children in 6.5 years! She was 40 1/2 when my little brother was born). My brother had a baby, then a little over 7 months later I had my first. 3 months after that the same brother and his wife had twins, giving my mom a total of 4 grandchildren in just under 11 months! Yes, she was beyond thrilled! :) My MIL on the other hand, was under 40 with her first grandchild, and had another baby of her own 16 months later! So my oldest has an uncle that is younger than him :) Anyway, enjoy those new grandbabies and Congratulations on becoming a grandmother!

    1. Thanks Naomi :-) I am not 60 yet but my husband almost is :-) I didn't have children until just after I turned 28 and my oldest son just got married at 29. So, I started off in a hurry with twins!!

  5. Congratulations! I always wanted twins. What a joyfilled life you will all have with the beautiful little girls.

I have six kids spread out in age. I still had a little one at home when I became a gramma in my early 40's. I have a daughter who is 10, grandkids are 5,3,1 and one on the way. So, I am both a very young gramma and a very old mother all at the same time, since many mothers of 10 year olds are much younger than I am.

This is a book I highly recommend for Grammas, it is a Bible study book, but has so many encouraging ideas to pray for your grandkids and play with them. This author is a dear friend of mine and her Bible study book is amazing.

    Congrats, again!

    1. Congratulations, my friend! Twin granddaughters. How fun! My cousin became a grandma at 31. She was 17 when she had her daughter and her daughter got pregnant at 14. So she was the youngest grandma that I know.

Since you were able to be at the hospital with her, does that mean that they live not too far from you? That will be lovely if you can see them quite often.

  6. CONGRATULATIONS to both you and your daughter on twin girls!! How exciting. I'm like Mindy, I always wanted twins but so far haven't had them. I did have two babies 13 1/2 months apart... I think it's hard than twins because they are so close in age and yet so far... not sure if that can make sense? Haha. Anyway, they sound like they are great sizes at such young ages. May God protect them and help them to grow quickly in these next few months when they are so little.

When I was a little girl my family would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up...
"Tandis, what do you want to me when you grow up?"
    Me, "A Gramma!"
"But Tandis, before you can be a Gramma, you HAVE to be a Mom."
Me, "NOPE, I want to be a Gramma!"

They would laugh. And I don't remember what I would do because I don't even remember this. :)
However, I think Grammas are wonderful. I had two loving Grammas who both pointed me towards the Lord Jesus. I am so thankful for their influence in my life.
Grammas have such a unique opportunity in life and quite often Grandkids cling to them practically as their mother if they are given the chance. What a special bond it can be.

  7. Congratulations!!! Your granddaughters are gorgeous!!! I am in the opposite situation. My family is so young (Z and I married only 5 years and with a 3 yr old and a 1 1/2 yr old) when so many of my friends are grandparents already. :) We sort of got a late start...but better late than never.

    1. I got a late start too, so don't feel bad...it keeps you young in the long run. I had my oldest son when I was 27...and he is 29 now (DON'T do the math, LOL) All our friends have been grandparents a LONG time...hey, but they will all think you are young!!

  14. Congratulations on becoming a Grammy. I'm a firm believer that age is a state of mind. I think I'm way younger at 58 years old than my mother was at the same age. You are in for a fabulous treat with two wonderful granddaughters. Enjoy!

Stopping in from the GRAND Social.

  15. Thank you Nita, grandparentsplus2, Marci, Kaye,Grandma KC, Lisa, and Vicki for all of your encouraging comments. I loved them!! I have visited the babies five times. They are still in NICU but doing just great!!

I don't feel old at all (most of the time) but know that is a blessing that I have today but maybe not tomorrow. We can suddenly loose our health at any age so we must be thankful each day for the gift of our health.
